What Is Liposuction?

What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes the unwanted fat from the body. Liposuction can be performed on various different areas in the body containing fat, including arms, belly, back, buttocks and thighs. This procedure is also carried out along with other types of cosmetic surgeries such as tummy tuck or different types of lifts, in order to achieve the best final result out of both procedures. Liposuction procedure is used to contour and shape the desired areas.

Why Liposuction?

People all around the globe are looking for different methods to alter their body shape and loose unwanted fat. The concept of body image has always been important to individuals, specially women. With aging and weight gain, the amount of fat in body increases. Diet and exercise are some of the best methods to improve the overall body shape, but in these methods, specific body parts cannot be correctly altered. With diet and exercise, the fat loss occur in all of the individual’s body parts and each area of the body cannot be changed and contoured as desired. Liposuction can alter the body in specific areas and contour the body to the desired shape. As you gain weight, the amount of fat in your body increases. This happens when the fat cells increase in size and volume. Liposuction helps by decreasing the amount of fat cells in the body, creating a slimmer and more contoured look in certain body parts.

How Is Liposuction Performed?

There are a couple of different types of liposuction carried out by plastic surgeons. You will often undergo general anesthesia for the operation. Your surgeon will consult with you during a session about the procedure and its final results. He/she will ban you from smoking and taking certain medication such as blood thinners (Aspirin, etc.) before your operation.
Your surgeon chooses a suitable method of liposuction based on your goals and desired final results, your personal conditions, the area undergoing operation and whether or not you had liposuction before. There are four main techniques for liposuction: Tumescent liposuction, Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL), Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL) and Power-assisted liposuction (PAL).
The most common type of liposuction is the tumescent liposuction method. In this method, the first step is injecting a sterile mix of salt and water solution, anesthetic and epinephrine into the fat cells to make them ready for removal. The surgeon will make a tiny incision on the designated area and will insert a thin metal tube called the cannula to reach the fat layer. Using the cannula, your plastic surgeon will suction the fat and fluid out of the designated area. The incisions will be closed with surgical sutures. The procedure can last several hours depending on the extent of operation and the areas of body involved.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Not everyone is a good candidate for liposuction. You must meet certain criteria before considering liposuction as an option. The suitable candidates for liposuction procedure must:

  • Be relatively healthy and fit without serious medical conditions

  • Have firm, elastic skin and muscle tone

  • Be nonsmokers

  • Be realistic towards the final results of cosmetic surgeries

  • Not be overweight

It is important to mention that liposuction is not a method of weight loss. Liposuction only contours the body and removes persistent and stubborn body fat in certain areas of the body. You must be in an ideal shape, close to your ideal weight and have a healthy BMI to be a suitable candidate for liposuction procedure.

What to Expect After Liposuction Procedure?

You will probably experience some pain, bruising, redness and swelling after the surgery, and your surgeon will prescribe pain killers to ease your discomfort and bring down the inflammation and swelling. You may be advised to wear compression garments to bring down the swelling more quickly and speed up the healing process. The swelling may last for a couple of weeks, but you can return to your normal lifestyle after a few days. You should avoid smoking for several weeks post operation to prevent delaying the healing process and post operation complications.
Your body may look even more bloated right after the surgery, and the results will show after the swelling is down. The skin of the surgical area will be loose but it will firm up again in time. You can expect to see the final results of liposuction procedure in 3 months.
It’s best to follow a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and exercise in order to maintain the results of the surgery. The scars of the surgery will be almost unnoticeable, as plastic surgeons make these incisions small, carefully and in the natural tear and folds of skin. You should always follow your surgical team’s instruction to avoid complications and reach the best results.

What Are the Risks of Liposuction Procedure?
