What is Botox?
Botox is the brand name of a type of toxin produced from a certain bacteria that is injected into the skin to treat wrinkles and creases on the face. It has a few other uses as well that will be discussed below. It works by disconnecting the nerve and muscle connection, resulting in paralyzed face muscles. The injection and the procedure is commonly known as Botox, but other formulations such as Dysport and Xeomin are used as well. The effects of Botox can last between three months to a whole year.
Why Botox?
Botox has been widely popular since its invention. In 2017, Botox was the number one cosmetic procedure carried out in USA. However, it is not just used for its cosmetic purposes. Botox can help with a couple of different conditions:
-
Wrinkles and face creases: Whenever you laugh, cry or frown, the muscles in your face contract and the skin covering those muscles tighten or pull, often causing deep creases on specific parts of the face. One of the most known and popular uses of Botox injections is helping with the smoothing of the mentioned wrinkles. Botox injection can help with the deep wrinkles on the forehead, the frown lines, and the wrinkles around the eye known as crow’s feet wrinkles. If you have any one of these wrinkle types, Botox can smoothen your face and offer a fine, crease free, youthful skin. However, it cannot be used against wrinkles that have been occurred due to sunrays or gravity.

How Is Cosmetic Botox Procedure Done?
Your doctor will discuss the procedure and its outcomes with you beforehand. You and your doctor will decide what parts of your face will be needing Botox injections. You should avoid drinking alcohol a week before the procedure. Also, you have to avoid taking anti-inflammatory medicine a couple of weeks prior to the procedure as to reduce the post-procedure swelling.
The procedure itself is straightforward and simple. It takes a few minutes to inject the Botox into the desired areas using a very fine needle. You will not be needing anesthesia and you will feel mild stinging and discomfort during the procedure.
